THE HIDDEN PLACES OF THE HEART

Walk in Truth

When God's Truth Becomes the Voice You Follow

Scripture

“It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us.”
— 2 John 1:4 (NIV)

Holy Spirit Insight

One of the greatest battles we face is not between good and evil. It is between truth and everything else competing for our attention.

The world is filled with voices. Fear has a voice. Shame has a voice. Disappointment has a voice. Pain has a voice. The past has a voice. People have voices. If we are not careful, we can spend years living according to voices that God never intended to lead us.

Many people know what God's Word says. The deeper question is whether we live by it. There is a significant difference between knowing truth and walking in truth. Walking in truth means allowing God's Word to become louder than our fears, emotions, disappointments, and the lies we have believed about ourselves.

Eve and the First Battle for Truth

The first spiritual battle recorded in Scripture was not about behavior—it was about truth.

“Did God really say...?”
— Genesis 3:1 (NIV)

That question continues to echo today. Did God really say He loves you? Did He really say He will provide for you? Did He really say He forgives? Did He really say He has a purpose for your life?

The enemy rarely begins by attacking our actions. He begins by questioning God's truth. Once truth becomes unclear, every decision becomes vulnerable.

The Voices We Carry

Many people are living from wounds rather than truth. A painful childhood, rejection, divorce, failure, betrayal, or insecurity can become the lens through which they view themselves.

I understand this struggle. There were seasons in my life when rejection and painful experiences attempted to define my identity. If I had listened only to those voices, they would have shaped my future.

Yet God's truth continually called me back—not to deny the pain, but to build my life on something stronger than my experiences: His Word.

Experiences change. Feelings change. People change. God's truth remains.

Jesus in the Wilderness

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, Satan repeatedly challenged Him. Each time Jesus responded in the same way:

“It is written.”

He did not respond with emotions, opinions, or arguments. He responded with truth. Jesus fought deception with God's Word.

How different would many of our battles be if we responded with truth rather than emotion?

Walking, Not Visiting

Notice that 2 John does not say, “I am glad they know the truth.” It says they are “walking in the truth.”

Walking implies movement, consistency, and daily choices. Truth is not meant to be visited on Sunday and forgotten on Monday. It is meant to guide our marriages, friendships, leadership, parenting, decisions, thoughts, and reactions.

Walking in truth means choosing God's perspective even when our feelings pull us in another direction.

A Personal Reflection

One of the greatest lessons God continues to teach me is that I must constantly bring my beliefs back under His Word—not just my actions, but my beliefs.

Sometimes we unknowingly build beliefs from our experiences rather than from Scripture.

Yet God's Word speaks a different truth. Every day we must decide which voice will shape our lives—the voice of our wounds or the voice of God's truth.

Walking in truth is choosing His voice again and again.

Heart Change Questions

  1. What voice has been influencing me most lately?
  2. Is there a lie I have been believing about myself, others, or God?
  3. What truth from Scripture do I need to hold onto in this season?
  4. Am I merely knowing truth, or am I actively walking in it?

Action Steps

1. Identify the Lie

Write down one negative belief that keeps returning. Be honest before God.

2. Replace It with Truth

Find a Scripture that directly challenges that lie. Write it down and read it daily throughout the week.

3. Practice Truth

The next time fear, shame, or discouragement speaks, respond as Jesus did: “It is written...” Then declare God's truth aloud.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your truth that never changes. Forgive me for the times I have listened to fear more than faith and believed voices that do not come from You.

Help me recognize the lies that attempt to shape my thinking. Renew my mind through Your Word. Teach me not only to know Your truth but to walk in it.

When emotions rise, anchor me in truth. When fear whispers, remind me of Your promises. When confusion comes, let Your Word be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

May my life bring joy to Your heart as I learn to walk faithfully in Your truth.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.
